"Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.
I will either find a way, or make one."

- Gen. Hannibal Barca, Carthage

TOAD Founder and CEO, Mark Hooper, is the only person to ever graduate as the number one student in US Navy SEALs school then immediately enroll in the US Army’s most Elite Unit, the combat medics of 18 Delta, from which he also graduated first in class. He now applies the same work ethic, problem-solving skills, and keen attention to detail he learned as a SEAL to his role as Chief Executive Officer at TOAD.

Upon discharge with honors from the military after 10 years of active duty service, Mark shifted his focus to the telecommunications industry, where he worked on Cape Cod as an independent contractor for companies such as AT&T, Comcast, and Media One Cable Vision. He soon became a triple technician, specializing in cable TV (analog, digital, and high-definition), telephony, and internet networking and distribution. He continued to hone his skills by earning basic and advanced satellite-distribution licenses and working for DirecTV and Dish Network.

TECHNOLOGY

From where are you + how'd you get started?

I grew up on the Cape. I started at TOAD as an Installer and quickly moved up to Programmer. At the time, it was just Mark, myself, and another installer. I learned the craft from trial by fire, and those flames get hot! I've worked on every type of system that we offer and learned from one of the best in our trade.

How'd you become a Toad?

I went to Cape Cod Regional Technical High School enrolled in the Electrical program. Mark asked my guidance counselor to help him find some good students to hire. The first day on the job, he had me terminating Fiber Optic Cable in our client's kitchen. The next day, I was helping him fix issues with smart home programming. I quickly found that this career fits me to a T, and I love it. I took a little break to start a family. Now I'm back and wouldn't have it any other way.

Something that no one would guess about you?

I was a radio DJ in a past life.

Who's your hero + why?

My grandfather. He's the voice of reason inside my head.

Best thing that someone ever said to you?

"May I have your recipe, please?"

By what tools do you live + die?

They're not tools, but no question, I live and die by my family. Everything that I do is for them.

TECHNOLOGY

From where are you + how'd you get started?

I'm from Hebron, Maine. After graduating high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy for a 4-year contract as a Cryptologic Technician Technical (CTT) specializing in radar analysis, threat detection, and anti-ship missile defense. I spent 10 months off the coast of Iran and was assigned to DDG-55 USS Stout for my 3-year tour.

How'd you become a Toad?

I met Mark at a U.S. Navy ship tour of LSD 51 USS Oak Hill in Rockland, ME. Fast forward 4 years, we stayed in touch. When I finished my contract with the Navy, he invited me to Massachusetts to work with TOAD. I've been here ever since.

Something that no one would guess about you?

I'm not too fond of math. My glasses tend to make people think that I'm a math wizard.

Who's your hero + why?

My father. He taught me early that life will knock you down, but you need to get right back up and fight back. He taught me how to persevere, and for that, I'm grateful.

Best thing that someone ever said to you?

When I was young, my mother sat me down and explained how we had no money. Then she looked at me and said, "You can do better than me. If there were anything in this world that I'd wish for, it would be for you to live up to your maximum potential."

By what tools do you live + die?

Google, hands down, is my favorite tool, and I use it religiously. You can find out anything in the world just by googling it.

TECHNOLOGY

From where are you + how'd you get started?

I grew up in Falmouth, MA and started my career at an engineering lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. One day, my boss hooked me up with a geology-based expedition to the mid-Atlantic ridge doing deep-sea rock dredging. I learned ship-based work skills, such as working in inclement weather, deck operations, and long shifts at strange hours. When I got home, I immediately applied to UMASS Amherst for a geology degree and completed it while taking more contracted positions doing rock dredging out at sea.

How'd you become a TOAD?

My friend Newman, whom I've known since high school, introduced me to Mark. I've been enjoying my time here ever since.

Something that no one would guess about you?

I've hiked almost every named mountain in the presidential range of the White Mountains.

Who's your hero + why?

Odysseus. The Odyssey is one of my favorite stories.

Best thing that someone ever said to you?

"Do what you love, love what you do."

By what tools do you live + die?

Climbing rope and carabiners. I do rock climbing in the summer, and I like incorporating it into my work.
